About the hike
Trip Date: Saturday, April 25, 2026.
This hike combines multi-millennial history with an amazing natural landscape. We will begin with an underground incursion, followed by the exploration of geological monuments, lakes, and the settlement.
The Story of Our Trail START (Underground Visit): The Roman Mines
The highlight of the day and our first objective: visiting the Roman underground galleries (Alburnus Maior). This is where the 50 wax tablets were discovered (essential instruments for Roman law), which brought international fame to Roșia Montană. We will explore the heart of this universal heritage!
Surface Circuit (Landscape and Culture):
Mining Cultural Landscape: We will continue with a light hike on the surrounding hills to enjoy the landscape shaped over centuries, admiring the artificial lakes (tăuri) and dams.
Natural Monuments & Viewpoints: Our trail will lead us past Piatra Corbului (Raven's Rock), a spectacular geological site, and we will have wide views towards the famous Detunate peaks.
Surface Heritage: We will explore the settlement, admiring the local architecture (including houses said to hide secrets!) and we will see the diversity of churches (Orthodox, Greek-Catholic, Roman-Catholic), testimonies of the cosmopolitan society during the Habsburg Empire.
In short: A complete experience that brings to life the history, legends, and biodiversity of a place with an unparalleled cultural heritage.
Trail Information
Objectives: Roman Galleries, The Lakes (Tăurile), Piatra Corbului, Historic Center
Elevation gain: ∼350 m (Predominantly easy/hilly hike)
Length: ∼8-10 km (Exploration circuit)
Approximate duration: 5 – 6 hours (effective hiking time + visits and extended breaks)
Trail type: Easy Circuit (Cultural Exploration)
Difficulty: Easy. Accessible to anyone; the focus is on visiting, not on physical effort.
Required Equipment
Hiking boots/shoes (Mandatory, for the uneven terrain around the lakes).
3-layer clothing, adapted for late spring.
Extra jacket/fleece – Extremely important: The temperature in the Roman galleries is constantly low.
Water and snacks.
