The Story of the Route

Cabin + Lakes + Peaks + Muscle Fever = LOVE

We're going on a spectacular weekend through the heart of the highest and most serious massif in Romania. Two days in which we'll explore legendary lakes, intimidating ridges and places that every mountaineer dreams of reaching

The first day takes us to one of the most beautiful alpine lakes in the Carpathians: Lake Călțun. We are preparing an intense circuit about which there is no point in saying how beautiful it is because it is superlative.

In the evening we retreat to Cabana Bâlea, where we strategically hydrate, lick our wounds with dignity and prepare for the next day. Because you don't come to Făgăraș just to take pictures. You also come to earn the right to complain a little the next day.

The next day we head to Capra Lake and Buteanu's Hunt, one of the most spectacular accessible peaks in the area. On the way back, we also check the situation at Acul Revolver before reaching the cabin.

In short: Two hard but very beautiful days, in a place where Romania plays in the Champions League of the mountains.

Additional information

Itinerary

We leave Cluj / Bucharest on Friday afternoon and head to what many consider the unofficial capital of the Fagaras Mountains: Bâlea Lac.

After settling in at the cabin, we have a short technical-tactical meeting, analyze the route, establish the roles of each player, and try to convince ourselves that the next day, the almost 1,000 meters of difference in level aren't really that much.

Saturday (Long Day): A spectacular hike in the alpine area awaits us. We set off towards Lake Călțun, one of the most beautiful glacial lakes in the Carpathians, passing over Lăițel Peak (2391 m), an excellent viewpoint over the Fagăraș ridges.

We will have approximately 12 km and almost 950 m of elevation gain. That is, exactly how much we need to truly appreciate the comfort of the cabin in the evening.

Evening: We return tired, happy and a little more respectful of the Fagaras Mountains. Dinner, stories and rest become strategic priorities for the next day.

Sunday (Day of Panoramas): We wake up with renewed energy and head towards Şaua Capra and Vânătoarea lui Buteanu, one of the most spectacular and accessible peaks in the area.

On the way back, we pass by Capra Peak, admire Acul Revolver, greet Capra Lake and return to Bâlea Lake, closing an extremely beautiful alpine circuit.

It will be a slightly milder day, but not without panoramas. Approximately 500 m difference in elevation and enough time to enjoy the ridges, lakes and one of the most spectacular alpine areas in Romania.

The return: In the afternoon we say goodbye to Făgăraș and head towards Cluj / Bucharest, with our phone battery full of photos and with the internal battery a little more charged than it was on Friday.

In short: two days of real mountains, glacial lakes, spectacular ridges, a welcoming cabin and exactly the right amount of effort to make each panorama worthwhile.
